RE: Keep MH plugged into ac at home when not using?

If you store the unit off site, s it OK to remove the battery between trips, keep it on a smart charger at home, and then reconnect every couple of months when travelling? Inconvient, yes, but any harm you can think of?

RE: Here comes Kyle, stay or go?

I live in hurricane territory. If you have an option to leave (and a Class A provides the perfect escape pod) you should leave. Even a Cat 1, which some might ride out in a sturdy house on high ground). Galveston had only a Cat 2 hurricane and it was devastating.
Hurricanes are not amusing summer showers - they kill people. I'd be packed and gone.

RE: Where to winter

Agree that Florida's Gulf Coast is beautiful. There's Sanibel and Periwinkle, lots of results in Fort Myers and even up in the Tampa area.

RE: RVing is cheaper than car & motel, cost calculation

I think most of us have considered these kinds of comparisons from time to time. I just can't conclude that RVing is cheaper when I honestly include everything (RV cost, depreciation, insurance, repairs). It just isn't (at least for me).
Sure you can cobble together certain scenarios where it may be cheaper, but overall it's an expensive hobby which you pay to enjoy (maybe squatting for months in Florida then going home, but that's more like a mobile home lifestyle). Nothing wrong with that, just like any other recreation or leisure pursuit.

Thanks. Any guess on RV insurance for a $100k rig?

Cost to Full-ime: What goes up, what goes down?

My wife and I were trying to get a handle on expenses if we choose to full-time one day. Without figuring the initial cost of the RV, here is what we have:
Expenses that decrease:
Homeowners' Insurance
Property taxes
Utilities
Car insurance (2 down to 1)
Home maintenance
Expenses that Increase:
Service and maintenance on RV
Gas or diesel
Apartment rental- modest 1 bedroom (this is unique to us - we want to maintain a small stick home for a number of reasons - at least it's offset by not having to rent a self-storage place).
Campsites: 365 x $25
This is just a start for us. What are we missing so far?

RE: Will diesel and gas flip-flop again?

Who cares.....Having the rumble ... is worth it.
:)
That's what my Harley rider buddies said, too. Didn't buy it then, don't buy it now ;).

Will diesel and gas flip-flop again?

Can you think of any plausible scenario where diesel will once again be less expensive than gas?
As I contemplate purchasing a Class A I figure that the mileage advantage of diesel kind of neutralizes the current lower price of gasoline. Heck - diesel may be 10-12% more expensive per gallon, but getting 8-9mpg versus 6-7mpg with gas pretty much makes that a wash.
Now, if there was even a small but reasonable possibility that diesel will regain the price advantage that would clinch it for me.

RE: High CG water pressure...could cause a mess...

I have a pressure valve to keep it at 40 lbs but found that a good practice is to turn the water source on slowly, and raise it just enough to maintain a usable output at the kitchen sink: no more than needed. In our rig, this also happens to be just enough for a comfortable shower, as well.

RE: LLC's for RV's in Florida, Good News

Regarding liability, my non-lawyer impression is that you cannot avoid it if you yourself are the cause of the damages. Hit someone, cause someone harm, start a fire that damages the RV next to you, etc. and you are still liable.
However, if you hire someone else to do work and the injury or damages occur as a result of what someone else does (e.g. a mechanic, the guy detailing your rig, a manufacturer's defect in the stove, whatever) they your liability is limited to the assets of the LLC - your personal assets are otherwise protected.

A Short Class A

Our city ordinance requires any vehicle parked in the driveway to be 10' in height or shorter, including the rooftop air conditioner. My Trailmanor TT is fine, but we are considering a small class A.
Storage cost and inconvenience is a major hurdle for us, but if we could park it in the driveway...
Does anyone know of a mainstream RV line that would be that short? Not even sure where to start looking, and even the Winnebago Aspect (a class C) is 11'.

RE: The Future of Motor Homes

As a would-be upgrader to a Class A from our TT, here's another take: we postponed indefinitely the above upgrade, but agreed that the one scenario where it still made sense (for us) is if we full-time. We were going to part-time with a modest stick home here in Fla.
As a part-timer, the costs just didn't make sense for us. The fixed costs, storage, > 60 cent per mile fuel, maintaining a fixed home simultaneously, the whole deal.
On the other hand, full-timing frees up a lot of money from the sale of the stick home. The fuel costs are high, but we can control how much we travel. Furthermore, the low, low prices on decent sized RVs relative to a year ago, would probably cover 3 years worth of fuel.
So now our choice is whether to full-time or give up the idea of Class A part-time hobby ownership altogether.

RE: Stolen Gas

I like the idea of leaving just 5 or 10 gallons when the rig is in storage.
Maybe add a sticker like they do in small stores and delivery trucks: "This tank contains no more than 6 gallons of gasoline when in storage." Of course, that assumes the jackass can read... Maybe one of those loud contact sirens like they put in doorways around swimming pools - shreaking noise when the door is opened unless you hit a bypass button, runs on a 9-volt.

RE: Crossing the Country on I10 CA to FL, Suggestions?

Where in the Tampa area are you staying? I can probably give you a couple of tips (aside from Disney, about 90 minutes away, and Busch Gardens in Tampa. The Lowery Park Zoo is fantastic, too. Fort Desoto Beach is the best and has a decent campground.

RE: Warm Weather Storage- Run A/C or Not?

Are there problems leaving the unit plugged in all the time regarding burning off the battery fluid? Not talking about with a battery-tender, just about plugging it in to shore power directly.
I plug my RV in for an overnight every couple of weeks only. So far, even after a 5 month period of disuse, all seems well with the electric systems.

RE: Damon Unveils "Avante" Fuel-Efficient Class A

I wonder how many people will trade in their depreciated $60K, 8 MPG motorhome for a $140K 14 MPG motorhome?
Don't know about that market, but from the perspective of a potential new Class A buyer, it would get my interest. Heck, my Sequoia plus Trailmanor don't do much better than 14 mpg.
At 10K miles a year, we're talking over a couple of thousand a year in fuel cost alone, and likely better resale than a guzzler assuming fuel prices rise.

RE: Manufacturers: who has staying power

From a pure financial standpoint I would bet on Tiffin. Family owned with little to no debt and it is usually the overhead from high interest financing of the business that dips into cash flow and then forces these high rolling fast growth companies to file chapter 11 or 7.
Interesting point. Have the younger Tiffins committed to take it all when the older Tiffin(s) retire to Tahiti?
